FINAL ASSIGNMENT: RHYTHM & VINES

Armed with a camera and a 3 day VIP pass, the final duty at 1AM for our lovely Dutch intern Joline before heading back to Holland was to experience New Years at Rhythm & Vines… from start to finish. We know, a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it! SEE FULL GALLERY >>

THE END IS NEAR

Not only this year is almost finished, my internship is coming to an end too. The hard part of saying goodbye to some people has already started and at the same time I welcomed my parents to New Zealand this week. The last big project for 1AM will be Rhythm and Vines with New Years which probably will be the best way to finish my internship with! After that I will cross over to the South Island to spend my last weeks in some of the most beautiful places in New Zealand!

THE CHECKS XMAS PARTY

One of the many pre-christmas parties this week was ‘The Checks Xmas Party’ which apparently was going to be a big one! The Kings Arms, also called ‘the city’s premiere rock ‘n’ roll venue’, turned out to be a quite cool location for this gig. The big garden was really nice to get some fresh air and sit down in between the performances. I have to say I did not know one of the bands before (The Checks, Pagan Summer, Street Chant, etc.) and was not sure what to expect but I got into it pretty quick (that also includes falling over by trying to make a shortcut through the mosh pit; big mistake).

ZAMBESI A/W 2011 PREVIEW

Today we went to the preview of Zambesi’s latest autumn/winter 2011 collection which they showed before during New Zealand Fashion Week. We have a great backstage video of this show which you can watch on 1AM TV. There are also some snapshots of this show on my intern’s diary. Thanks to the Zambesi preview we could see this total collection now up close and look at the possibilities of al these multifunctional garments.

STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB JEWELLERY LAUNCH

Stolen Girlfriends Clubs Dont Be So Precious Jewellery Launch

Stolen Girlfriends Club celebrated the launch of their new jewellery collection with an exhibition called ‘Heavy Metal‘ and a short film by Derek Henderson which we didn’t stick around to see but found out afterwards that this film apparently already had been on youtube since the 4th of november, but I think it has been a quite good kept secret since it has ‘only’ 211 views.

FRANKLIN ROAD CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Since a few years it is a tradition on Franklin Road in Auckland to decorate (almost) all the houses with Christmas lights in December. One house decorated even more extravagant than the other, neighbors seem to fight over who can get the most expensive electricity bill (I am sorry that is the first thing I am thinking about). Apart from that it was a good opportunity for a late night stroll through Franklin Road and to try pick up the Christmas feeling (it is not really working on me yet with this warm weather).

SINTERKLAAS

While we just got an amazing warm weekend here in Auckland I keep seeing photos passing by of my friends on Facebook wearing scarves, gloves and hats since the temperature in Europe is starting to go below zero right now. Things like that are making it even more clear for me that I am so far away from them and from home. Not that I mind being here at the moment because I really hate winter, getting up while it is dark and cold an coming home when it is dark again for a few months gets you really depressed! But I will be missing out on some parties and traditions this month and I am not even talking about christmas and new years eve but more about ‘Sinterklaas’.

SNAPDRAGON BAR OPENING

After SASS & BIDE’s store opening in Ponsonby it was time to check out Viaduct Harbour’s new bar and dining space Snapdragon. The invitation told us that we would be the first to discover the many surprises Snapdragon has to offer. I have to say they did surprise me when we kept walking from room to room and kept discovering new spaces, the place was huge and seemed never ending. Cool detail was the Harry Potter-esk secret door in a bookshelves wall. The big balconies on the outside of the bar were great too since they offered the best night view on Auckland’s harbour.

SASS & BIDE STORE OPENING

Yesterday it was time to celebrate the official opening of the first SASS & BIDE store in New Zealand, located at 85 Ponsonby Road in Auckland! The store is a great addition to the stylish Ponsonby neighborhood that also welcomed a new Ruby Boutique two weeks ago (read about that here or watch the video on 1AM TV). The new SASS & BIDE summer collection looked absolutely gorgeous with a lot of cute dresses in such nice colors and materials. The opening seemed to be a success since the place was totally packed and everyone was enjoying some good music by People of Paris.
Sadly enough we had to leave again quite soon to go to the next party: the opening of new bar and dining space Snapdragon (read more about that right here).

WAIHEKE WEEKEND

This weekend it was time for a getaway to an island again: Waiheke! While leaving Glenn and Amanda behind on deadline (where is the intern if you need her?) I was on the ferry to go do some wine tasting at some of the 23 (!) vineyards that are on Waiheke. At our arrival we were surprised with the fact that there was an Olive Festival going on, so apart from wine tasting we also ended up tasting some olives, really nice olive oils, oysters, cheese and cupcakes while listening to some jazz music.
