SHOWROOM 22 MEDIA DAY

Although most of us can not wait for the summer to begin the New Zealand fashion world is already focussing on the autumn/winter 2010/2011 collections. Last week Showroom 22 showed the new collections of all the brands they are representing at their media day. I was really happy to see that they were also showing some of the collections of the AUT Rookie Show from last week (watch the show in total on 1AM TV or click here for some snapshots). It was really nice to see those outfits from up close to see what the textiles and colors feel and look like. And that actually applies for all the collections of course! I will not be here next winter but I am sure that you are not going to be cold in some of the fashionable knitwear I have seen! But for now I rather want to focus on a really sunny summer..

YOUNG TALENT: PEARL MCGLASHAN

Last week we have been shooting Shortland Street girl Pearl McGlashan who is playing the role of  Jasmine Cooper. I must say I have not seen Shortland Street that many times, only a few times when other people were watching it, so I have not seen her in action (yet). But Pearl is not only doing a good job acting in Shortland Street, she is also a singer in the band Bandicoot. You will see and read more about here soon in our new issue #13 with a fashion shoot by Stephen Tilley and hair and make up by Olwen Hopley.

AUT ROOKIE SHOW 2010

Tiffany Chang

The designs of the AUT Rookie Show were based on the possibilities for adventure and risk in fashion and textiles. Funny thing is that some of the young designers choose to use a lot of colors and some did the direct opposite by using a lot of black, grey and brown. Since there were 36 fashion graduates who all made great collections I will only show some snapshots of the designs that were standing out for me. If you would like to watch the complete show you can do that here on 1AM TV!

A VISITOR FROM HOME

This weekend my dutch friend Jordy was in town! He arrived in Auckland to start a trip of 4 weeks through New Zealand. This was the first time that I actually had to show someone around instead of people showing me around! And I have to say.. I did a very bad job at it. After showing some touristic spots around Queen street like the harbor there were not a lot of places to go since he is not really interested in shopping or the museum. It was one of those moments I felt really stupid for not having a drivers license, since Auckland is such a spread out city you can not get a good view of it by only walking through the city centre I think. Luckily I managed to rope a friend into driving us around to Takapuna Beach and back again over the Harbour Bridge to Mount Eden and One Tree Hill which made it a productive sightseeing day in the end.

MODEL CASTING

This week we went to Clyne Management for a model casting to check out some fresh faces that can possibly be in our new issue #13. We were really happy to see that there were a lot of girls and boys showing up and how great they looked. It was my job to take snapshots of all of them, you can see a couple of them underneath! I also got my ‘first lesson’ in how to make this group of pictures look good together, Glenn told me how to combine these photos and make them into pairs to make the series of photos look more balanced. It is going to be hard for us to choose between all these different models, we wonder which faces you would like to see again in 1AM Magazine??

A WORLD OF IT’S OWN

Last labour weekend was the perfect opportunity to make my first weekend trip. Destination: Great Barrier Island. On our way there with the ferry someone already told us that it was going to be ‘a life changing experience’. I thought that was a little bit exaggerated but in the end I kind of agreed. Apart from all the beautiful views it was mostly the life on the island that really impressed me. Great Barrier Island has no mains power, water supply, sewage system or streetlights. The people who live there have to use alternative energy systems like generators or solar power. Lots of them are also growing their own food since a lot of stuff in the supermarket is expensive because it has to be brought there by ferry.

SHOCK THE WORLD

In 2008 Casio’s G-shock watch celebrated its 25th anniversary and because of that they started their ‘SHOCK THE WORLD TOUR‘ in 2009. After visiting 12 cities worldwide (New York, London, Tokyo, etc.) last thursday it finally was Auckland’s turn! Shock the world Auckland was held at Halsey Street in the industrial setting of the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village, the same location as New Zealand Fashion Week. The evening started with a presentation about the latest limited edition Casio watches and interviews with David Dallas and Dan Gosling (who quoted that ‘the G-shock watches are very timeless’ when host Jay Reeve of MTV asked what he thought about the watches haha).

TIME FOR A CHANGE

Yesterday I have been changing the lay-out of my diary, it looks a lot less messy right now. It shows only 10 entries per page and you can read the total blogs by pressing the ‘read more’ button! So no scrolling through tons of pictures that are taking a long time to upload anymore! Another thing that was new yesterday was going to work by bike. I improved my cycle time to 30 minutes instead of the 45 minutes it took me last time I biked home from the office. It probably has something to do with the fact that I carried my laptop in a backpack this time, kind of ugly, but: convenient!
